Facebook to fix privacy breach

FACEBOOK has promised to fix a major privacy breach by this evening, after it was revealed the website was tracking users across the internet.

Australian technician Nik Cubrilovic blogged about the tracking on Saturday, and was called by Facebook's engineers in the US yesterday.

"Even if you are logged out, Facebook still knows and can track every page you visit," Mr Cubrilovic wrote in his blog post.

The accusation quickly spread around the world and the social networking site was forced to defend its position. Facebook reportedly promised to modify its technology so that users could no longer be tracked once they left the site.

Its current technology puts "cookies" in internet browsers that track which websites users go to, email addresses and other information that could be used by third-party advertisers.

Mr Cubrilovic said the big response to his revelation had been overwhelming.

"I haven't put the phone down this morning (and) have media calling random family members asking to talk to me," he tweeted.

"Facebook does not track users across the web," a Facebook spokesperson said in an earlier statement.

"Instead, we use cookies on social plugins to personalise content (eg. show you what your friends liked), to help maintain and improve what we do (eg. measure click-through rate), or for safety and security (eg. keeping underage kids from trying to sign up with a different age).

"No information that we receive when you see a social plugin is used to target ads; we delete or anonymise this (tracking) information within 90 days, and we never sell your information."

But Associate Professor Axel Bruns from the Queensland University of Technology said that it was not only Facebook people have to be concerned about.

"We think we understand Facebook as an organisation, but at the same time, exactly who has access to that cookie is another question," he told The Advertiser.

He said that cookies were generally used to store account information, but could be used by unscrupulous organisations to track the links people click on.

"They may see that every morning at 9am you log on to some internal website for the place you work for so they can see where you're working," he said.

"It may be possible to associate what you do online with your Facebook profile . . . they can look at what you're clicking on and your status updates."

The survey also reveals that more people look for information on medicines and self-diagnosis while surfing the net. Primary use of the internet for health purposes continues to be finding information about medicines (68 per cent of respondents) in all countries surveyed. Other uses include searching for information to make a self-diagnosis (46 per cent) and seeking other patients’ experiences (39 per cent). The use of the internet for interactive activities, such as emailing a medical professional, remains limited. According to the survey 18 per cent of respondents use social networking sites to find out about healthcare issues.

The study was carried out in the outpatient clinic of an urban, tertiary care private sector hospital in November 2004. The survey instrument consisted of an anonymous single-page questionnaire. Eight hundred and eighty consecutive adults aged 18-70 years, attending the general outpatient clinic of a tertiary care private hospital completed the questionnaire. Two hundred and eighty-one patients (32 per cent) acknowledged surfing the Internet, while 75 per cent (212/281) of them acknowledged that they accessed health-related information. Amongst those who accessed the Internet, 130 (61 per cent) found the information on the net to be of average quality. Almost all patients (211/212) felt that the information served the purpose and 95 per cent (201/212) also found it to be reliable. Only seven per cent (21/281) patients were aware of the presence of any quality standards pertaining to health information sites and none could name any accreditation standard.

Thus, we all start out with Microsoft's Internet Explorer after we buy one of the best laptop computers. However, for many of us, we realize the need to research other best web browser options as Internet Explorer fails us. In my case, Internet Explorer just kept crashing and had to reload and then it would be really slow. Since I am on the Internet a good part of the day, these inefficiencies caused me great frustration so I decided to research the alternatives.

The one most talked about is Mozilla's Firefox. So, I downloaded and installed Firefox. This was like a whole new world opening up. I kid you not. Firefox was so much better than Internet Explorer that it was not even a contest. From speed, to really cool add-ons, to multiple tabs, Firefox simply bested Internet Explorer in every single scenario.

I had also read about Google Chrome. Since nearly everything that Google does is extremely cool, I thought that Chrome may be even better than Mozilla Firefox. Sadly, though not disappointed, I was not nearly as impressed with Google Chrome as I was with Mozilla Firefox. I ran Google Chrome on one of the top 10 netbooks and truthfully, for me, Google Chrome was not easily navigable which is important since I am navigating all the time in my browser. The interface on Google Chrome was not user friendly and so I stopped using it after about 15 minutes.

If you are like me, you simply want a great browser that is fast, with cool features, and easy to use. For me, this contest was a no contest.

Problem :

Whenever I browse the internet, through Firefox or IE, the browser eventually freezes on Windows 7 . This happens about every 10 minutes. After the browser freezes it spreads to the rest of the system. The keyboard and mouse eventually stop responding and a hard reset becomes necessary.

Solution :

Internet Explorer 8 loads a bunch of add-ons with it. These, to some extent, also affect any browser you are using, so, for example, Firefox windows were freezing as well as IE8, but to a lesser extent.

Go into "tools" in your IE8 browser window, then "manage add-ons", then disable the add-ons.

I should have done it one at a time and tested after each one.

Instead, I disabled them all at once.

I noticed almost immediately that the internet windows were no longer freezing up.

I started to "enable" them one at a time, but as soon as I got to "Shockwave Flash 9.1.01", the windows froze again.
After hard booting, most of the add-ons disappeared from the list.

Right now I only have some Microsoft and Google add-ons enabled, but IE8 has been behaving itself and is actually pretty zippy.

The windows seem a little clearer than Firefox. Don't know what I have messed up by getting rid of all the add-ons, but at this point I don't care.

When I run into something that does not work, I will download add-ons one at a time. Hope this helps someone.

Fixing Firefox error -203 During Add-on Installation

I spent a couple days fighting with Firefox 3.6.8 on a fresh install of Snow Leopard. The problem was that add-ons would not install. Faced with life without Adblock Plus and Delicious Bookmarks, I was momentarily driven to Safari, but nevertheless needed Firefox for development.

Mozilla know about this problem, and even have a webpage with a solution: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Unexpected+installation+error+-203+when+installing+add-ons. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. First, I tried removing the supposedly corrupted extensions database files from my profile. Then, I tried creating a brand new profile. But I still had the same error.

It turned out that restarting Firefox was not sufficient. I had to entirely reboot my machine. It took me a day to figure this out, because it's a Mac... I don't reboot it, ever. Well, ok, when there's a major patch and Software Update says reboot. But that's it. If I want an OS that needs to reboot, I know where to find it.

So the exact steps, for me, were:

1. Create a new profile. Do this by running /Applications/Firefox/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -P in a terminal window. This starts the profile manager, and you can create a brand new profile and delete your old one.
2. Quit Firefox.
3. Reboot (sigh)

After logging in and starting Firefox, I could finally install extensions again.

Does Your Telephone Line Need Repair?

You don’t need any special equipment to determine if your phone line is the real culprit but before we get there, let’s run a few simple tests to discount all the other possibilities.

Test #1. Power-cycle the router and modem – unplug the cables, wait for couple of minute and then power on the modem followed by the router.

Open the web dashboard of your modem /router and note the following values for the downstream connection (not upstream). The fields are generally available under Statistics –> ADSL.

ADSL Line Stats

1. Line Attenuation (or Loop Loss) – It measures how much signal is lost between the phone exchange and your modem. Great the distance between the exchange and your home, the higher the attenuation. Anything below 50dB is considered acceptable.

2. Sync Speed (or Rate) – The speed at which the router connects to the exchange equipment.

3. SNR Margin (or Noise Margin) – This represents the difference between your current SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and the SNR that’s required to serve a particular speed. If the SNR Margin is low, you may experience frequent disconnections. Ideally, this should be 12dB or higher.

Once you have all these values, paste them into the ADSL Calculator and it will give you an estimate of the maximum speed that you get from the ISP.

If the SNR Margin is low or the Line Attenuation is high or if the calculated maximum speed is lesser than what you are paying for, the fault lies somewhere between your modem and the phone exchange. Keep a record of all these values at different times of the day and give your phone company a calls at its something that only they can fix.

Microsoft has revealed the beta version of Internet Explorer 9 has been downloaded by 10 million web users, just six weeks after its launch.

As research by Microsoft revealed web users only use 12 of the features in the browser regularly, the software company decided to give IE9 less-cluttered user interface. In keeping with the look of Microsoft's recent OS, Windows 7, the browser is framed in "glass" so web users see a page's content first and foremost.

IE9 also makes use of a number of functions first introduced in Windows 7, including the ability to pin sites to the taskbar, tear off a tab -- by dragging it away from the browser -- and using Windows Aero Snap to view two sites side-by-side.

"We are particularly excited about developer reaction and feedback to IE9 Beta, with 37 million pages views of our Test Drive site and 13,000 pieces of feedback submitted," Microsoft said, adding IE9 is "on track to be our fastest adopted browser ever."

The web browser hit the two million downloads mark just two days after its September 15 launch.

THE UK’s internet economy is now worth a staggering £100bn a year, according to a landmark survey commissioned by search giant Google.

The online economy now represents 7.2 per cent of UK GDP – more than construction, transport or utilities. The report shows this share is likely to grow by about 10 per cent a year, reaching 10 per cent of GDP by 2015.

The survey, carried out by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), shows the UK is among the top e-commerce economies, exporting £2.80 for every £1 imported. This is at odds with the offline economy, which exports 90p for every £1 imported.

Overall, the UK ranks sixth, scoring similarly to the Netherlands, Norway, and Finland and better than Germany, the US, and France. The highest-ranked country is Denmark. Within the UK London was the leading region.

The industry now employs 250,000 people in the UK. Around 60 per cent of the online economy is driven by online shopping and the cost of users’ connections to the internet.

The number of adults who bought goods or services online in the past year totalled 31m, or 62 per cent of all adults.

"At E-mage management, we help people to hunt for their fake profiles online on different websites and social networking groups that defame their entities, posing problems for them in seeking jobs, etc.," Karnika Seth, Cyber lawyer and provider of E-mage service, said.

"What we do is after having fetched such profiles, we sort out ways and means to get them deleted permanently," she said.

On an average, Seth addresses one such case every week. There has been an increasing number of fake profiles online on different websites like blogs, microblogs or social networking sites where fraudsters avenge their grudge or harass someone by creating their profile online that hampers his or her reputation.

"These fake profiles not only affect an individual on the personal level by creating difficulties in employment, ruining his or her social and professional connections, damaging reputation, but it also has an effect on their finances, in case of customers' or corporate data being stolen," another cyber crime specialist said.

Rashmi Sood (name changed), a researcher with a firm in the US, had sought the help of e-mage management to deal with her derogatory 'fake profile' which someone had created.

"I was not getting a job despite being the best in my field because someone had created an online fake profile of mine that had derogatory remarks about me.

"Here abroad, employers conduct an online screening of individuals before incorporating them in their organization. When I enquired with the organization, they directed me to this respective website."

Sood had registered a case with the police but it yielded no results, after which she turned to e-mage management for help.

"The police is not well trained or equipped to handle cyber crime cases and as such most of the time such cases are not registered. Even if they are registered, there is no investigation. That is why despite the IT Act being so old, conviction rate in cyber crime cases till date is only three," another cyber lawyer said.

Internet Explorer Browser Slowly Losing Users

According to StatCounter.com, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is losing web browser users.
The web analytics revealed that the amount of Internet Explorer users has fallen to below 50% in the month of September. Although Internet Explorer is still the leader in the web browser market, the combined market of web browsers is now larger than Microsoft’s browser.

At one point in time, Internet Explorer controlled over 90% of the web browsing market (mostly because most Windows computers were preloaded with Internet Explorer as the web browser). However, antitrust suits filed against Microsoft in the United States and European Union forced the company to offer Windows customers a list of web browsing operating systems to choose from.

Additionally, there are more web browsers in market now that are more sophisticated than Internet Explorer and are catching the eyes of many users, such as Apple’s Safari, Google’s Chrome, and Mozilla’s Firefox.
To stay in the game, Microsoft has noted the features it’s rivals offer (but they don’t) and rolled it into their latest version of product, Internet Explorer 9.

According to Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter’s CEO, “Just two years ago IE dominated the worldwide market with 67%.”

Fix Wireless Connection

If you need to fix your wireless connection, here's some troubleshooting tips to solve your connectivity problems. You are probably on a computer with a network connection, you wouldn't be able to see this page otherwise. :)

Many new laptops come with a physical switch that disables the wireless connection. Consult your computer’s manual and make sure that if you have such a switch, it is switched "on".

But what if the switch is "on" and your wireless connection still does not work?

Take a look at Windows Device Manager and make sure that the wireless card is listed there Learn how to access your Windows Device Manager.

If there is trouble with the Network adapter in the Device Manger, it will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it.

Next, log to Windows Control Panel/Network Connection, and make sure that there is Local Network Connection for the device.

If there is no icon for your Local Network Connection, Reboot your computer with your wireless switch "on". Windows would install the Network Connection.

Right click on the Local Network Connection icon, and choose properties.

If every thing is good thus far, look at the TCP/IP properties of the Wireless Local Connection.

Notice that the TCP/IP is set to "Obtain an IP Address and DNS Automatically", unless you were instructed at the first time when you set the Wireless to use a Static IP, you should leave it on "Obtain Automatically".

Many new wireless laptops and wireless ready desktops come with a configuration that loads the original wireless manufacturer’s utility at startup. The wireless connection can be maintained only by one agent. As a result, most of these utilities are programmed to switch off the Windows Zero Configuration (WZC).

Many people prefer the flexibility of WZC. In such a case the 3rd party utility has to be disabled from starting, and WZC has to be initiated again.

What if the wireless connection seems to be working and you can see in the wireless application that there is a signal and an available Wireless source but you still cannot use the Internet?

Seeing a signal in the wireless configuration application does not mean that you actually have a functional Wireless connection.

If you can use the Internet with your wireless computer, the wireless connection is OK. If you do not have an Internet connection available (or the connection does not work) a simple way to ascertain that you have a basic wireless connection is to try to use the Internet browser in a wireless client computer and find out if you can connect to the (Access Point). Most AP's are encrypted with a key, it is this key that is needed to complete the connection. Once you have the key and you try to connect WZC should ask to enter the key.

It's fast

IE 8 is slow and sluggish --- according SunSpider tests I ran a while back, it took about six times as long to complete SunSpider JavaScript tests as did its next slowest rival, Firefox 3.6.

It's sluggish no longer. Tests I ran on IE9 show that it's now faster than Firefox. It completed the benchmarks in an average time of 432 ms, faster than Firefox 4 beta, which completed them in 535 ms. It was still slower than Safari, Opera, and Chrome, but not by a wide margin: Safari completed them in 387 ms, Opera in 343 ms, and Chrome in 322 ms.

It's better-looking

IE9 features a cleaner-looking, stripped-down interface with tabs at the top. Gone are most buttons, menus, and controls. True, now all the browsers look basically the same, thanks to Chrome's interface innovation. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. And in IE9's case, it's a very good thing.

However, by default, a Bing toolbar is turned on, conflicting with the clean look. If you're not a fan of toolbars in general, or Bing specifically, it's easy enough to turn off.

It warns you about add-ons' performance problems

Add-ons can add a lot of overhead to browser load time and browsing time. Load down your browser with enough of them, and no matter the browser's basic speed, it can become sluggish.

IE9 has a very nice feature that automatically warns you via a pop-up when your add-ons increase load time and browsing time, and let you disable them. (If you want, you can later turn them on.) You can see the new tool in action, below. Other browsers, notably Firefox, would do well to follow suit, and develop tools like this as well.

It integrates with Windows 7

If you're a Windows 7 user, you'll find some useful features designed for that operating system. You can pin a Web site to the taskbar for easy launching, especially important in a world in which Web-based apps are replacing desktop apps.

When you launch a pinned site, IE9 automatically takes on the color of the site for its forward and back buttons, and displays the Web site's icon on the upper left of the browser.

In addition, developers can make use of the Windows 7 Jump List feature for pinned sites. So a news site, for example, could let people immediately navigate to a sports or technology section directly from the taskbar, without first having to launch the browser, and navigate.

It has a double-duty Address Bar

IE9 takes not just its new look from Chrome, but another innovation as well --- having the Address Bar do double-duty as a search box. So you can either type Web addresses or search terms. Microsoft calls it One Box. No matter what you call it, it's useful.

Rogue Antivirus Attack - Warning Microsoft

Microsoft is advising users to be wary of a rogue antivirus program that creates fake warnings that appear to come from the user's browser.

The program, called MSIL/Zeven by Microsoft, detects what browser is being used and then launches a page virtually identical to pages generated by Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox that warn users when they are about to surf to a malicious site.

A key difference is that there will be a place on the page for users to click to download an antivirus program to protect them.

"All the 'updates' point to a copy of MSIL/Zeven that promises to provide 'a new approach to windows detection,'" blogged Daniel Radu of Microsoft Malware Protection Center Dublin. "Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome do not offer such a solution when a Website is blocked. When installed, the product [Win7 AV] looks very genuine: It allows you to scan files, tells you when you're behind on doing your updates, and enables you to tweak your security and privacy settings. ... However, the features don't work; everything is there just to look nice, not to offer any kind of protection."

When another warning appears telling users about malicious files discovered on the machine, users are told the files cannot be deleted until they update. The idea is to get users to pay for the full version of the product, which has the ability to download updates, Radu wrote. However, these files "are totally bogus."

"If you decide to buy the product, this rogue opens an HTML window enabled with 'Safe Browsing Mode' and high strength encryption to 'help' and 'protect' you while completing your purchase," he blogged. "Of course, these features are totally worthless and don't actually do anything in the way of securing your credit card details."

The main page of the fake AV itself is designed to look similar to the Microsoft Security Essentials Web page, Radu noted.

"The people behind it have even copied the awards received by Microsoft Security Essentials and link to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center - pretty sneaky of them," he blogged.

Microsoft couldn't say much about the attack vector the mind or minds behind Zeven are using to infect people in the first place, but told eWEEK users should keep their computers protected with up-to-date antivirus.

Calling it simply Secure Browser, Dell Kace executives acknowledge the free browser security software works somewhat along the lines of that seen with browser sandboxing technology from GreenBorder Technologies, which was acquired by Google in 2007, and integrated into the Google Chrome product. Bob Kelly, senior product manager of Dell Kace, says Kace derives its technology, which it likes to call "application virtualization," from its acquisition of the company Computers in Motion two years ago.

The Dell Kace Secure Browser tool is said to use a kind of re-direction so that browser activity is shifted to an alternate area of the computer to isolate and contain harmful code. The 10MB security software, available for download from Dell's Kace site, is based on the current Firefox browser and Adobe Flash and Reader Plug-Ins.

The security tool also lets the user create what are called whitelists and blacklists of Web sites allowed to be visited. Microsoft offers web browser choice to IE users

Millions of European Internet Explorer (IE) users will have the option to choose an alternative browser from 1 March, Microsoft has announced.

It follows a legal agreement between Microsoft and Europe's Competition Commission in December 2009.

Microsoft committed to letting Windows PC users across Europe install the web browser of their choice, rather than having Microsoft IE as a default.

Figures suggest that over half the world's internet users have IE.

Testing for the update is already underway in the UK, Belgium and France.

The software update choice will arrive automatically for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 customers, according to a blog post by Dave Heiner, Microsoft's vice president and deputy general counsel.

The blog also contains screen grabs of the message as it will appear.

"Users who get the choice screen will be free to choose any browser or stick with the browser they have, as they prefer," wrote Mr Heiner.

Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera are among the alternative browsers that people will be offered.

"Millions of people who have never really thought about which browser to use will now be forced to make a choice," said BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones on his blog.

"That presents Microsoft's rivals with a unique marketing opportunity."

Mozilla Foundation chair Mitchell Baker described the news as "an important milestone towards helping people take control of their online lives."

If you're interested in protecting your online privacy, you've probably taken steps like deleting browser cookies or turning on the private browsing features of Safari and Google Chrome.

That's supposed to prevent Web sites from tracking you across repeat visits. But a forthcoming paper prepared by an Electronic Frontier Foundation technologist shows that they're not really effective at all.

The reason is simple, but counterintuitive: Modern browsers have been designed to send Web sites a torrent of information thought to be innocuous, including detailed version numbers, operating system information, screen size, what fonts are installed, and sometimes even in what order the fonts were installed. Firefox, for instance, sends every Web site a version number such as "Intel Mac OS X 10/Gecko/20100315 Firefox/3.5.9."

Once this collection of facts--which are individually anonymous--is combined together and compared against other users' web browsers, the data can become personally identifiable. (It's like being able to find someone's name if you know their birth date, ZIP code, and gender, which is not that difficult a task.)

Peter Eckersley the Australian computer scientist working at EFF who wrote the report, calls the technique "browser fingerprinting." Eckersley's paper will be presented at a privacy symposium in Berlin in July.

"There are implications both for privacy policy and technical design," concludes Eckersley, who believes that the law should treat browser fingerprints as personally identifiable information, which can be subject to greater restrictions. He also recommends that browsers be changed so they send less information about their configuration settings to Web sites.

If a Web browser has Flash and Java activated, Eckersley says, the odds of its fingerprint being unique are about 1 in 450,000. He collected data from hundreds of thousands of people who connected to EFF's "Panopticlick" Web site.

Mozilla Fixes Critical Firefox Flaws

Mozilla released fixes for two critical security vulnerabilities Friday, which covered the way for hackers to begin malicious attacks that could crash a browser or take complete control of a user's computer.

The latest Firefox version 3.0.8, which initially was slated for release April 1, addresses critical errors affecting multiple versions of the Firefox 3 Web browser.

One of the critical Firefox updates repaired a critical flaw, made public during the renowned pwn2own contest at the CanSecWest 2009 hacker conference earlier in March that could allow hackers to launch a drive-by attack in the context of the browser.

The flaw was publicly demonstrated by a German hacker known only as Nils, 25, who successfully hacked the browser in exchange for a Sony Vaio machine running Windows 7.
The second critical bug, affecting Firefox version 3.0.7, stems from a XSLT vulnerability that resulted from improper handling of errors when transforming an XML document. The flaw, which was first brought to light by security researcher Guido Landi, could potentially be exploited by attackers who enticed unsuspecting users to open a malicious file using the affected Firefox browser. Once the victim viewed an infected file, attackers could then execute arbitrary code on the user's computer to crash the browser or initiate a denial of service attack.

While the execution of arbitrary code hasn't been proven in the XSLT flaw, it is also not entirely ruled out, Secunia researchers said in blog post.

Mozilla said in its advisory Thursday that it had been investigating both issues and was in the process of undergoing quality assurance testing for the impending fixes, implying that they would be forthcoming soon.

Security experts recommended that users update their browsers with the latest version of Firefox in order to protect vulnerable systems from attack. Additionally, Secunia researchers advised in a blog post that users avoid opening untrusted Web sites or clicking on unsolicited links, which might contain malware.

Recommended cache settings

3. Do not configure Internet Explorer to clear the cache each time you exit the browser (Supported Netscape browsers have no equivalent setting).
4. Retain the browser's History (log of recently visited sites) for 4 days.
5. Before changing settings. Before changing cache/history settings, write down your current settings so that you can restore them if the new settings cause problems.

1. On the Edit menu click Preferences.
2. In the left pane of the Preferences dialog box, under Navigator, click History.
3. In the right pane (the History panel), under Browsing history, for Remember visited pages for the last __ days, type 4 in the text box.
4. In the left pane of the Preferences dialog box, under Advanced, click Cache.
5. In the right pane (the Cache panel), under Set Cache Options, change the number in the text box to 10. Make sure this number is not 0.

The browser, which will be released separately and also as part of the forthcoming Windows Vista operating system, is expected to ship in 2006, probably before Vista.

However, if a machine is running on a domain, IE 7 will automatically detect the intranet sites and revert to the intranet zone settings. Network administrators will be able to set group policies to ensure the browser runs as desired, the engineers wrote.

In Microsoft Windows Vista, the Internet zone will run in what the company calls "protected mode," to help protect against attacks that IE has been victim to in the past. Another feature, ActiveX Opt-In, will reduce potential damage from malicious Active X controls in the Internet zone, the engineers said. Those changes will be reflected in a new security level setting for the Internet zone, "medium high."

The "Trusted sites" zone, which provides a lot of autonomy for specific Web sites selected by the end user, will also change. It will now have a default security setting of "medium," the same as the Internet zone in IE 6. Users will be able to lower the setting if they want to, the engineers wrote.

Just like for previous beta releases, I am going to guide you through the upgrade steps for Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate 1 (IE8 RC1).

Before we begin, let me summarize the major changes you will see when installing IE8 RC1:

1. If you are a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 user and you are upgrading from IE8 Beta 1 or Beta 2 to IE8 RC1, you are no longer required to manually uninstall earlier IE8 builds. Instead, IE8 RC1 installer will automatically upgrade your machine from the earlier IE8 builds to the latest IE8 build, all with a single reboot.

2. There is a new pre-requisite for IE8 RC1 (KB957388). This update supersedes KB943302 and KB957055 and will be automatically installed as part of your RC1 upgrade, as long as you keep “Install the latest updates” checkbox checked. This update addresses known application compatibility issues in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 and improves the performance and reliability of IE8.

3. All IE8 Beta 1 and Beta 2 users will be offered IE8 RC1 via Windows Update in 25 languages. For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, the IE language that gets offered via Windows Update will match the base OS language. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, the IE language that gets offered via Windows Update will match the Active Language that the user selected for their account.

Note: If you are running Windows 7 Beta, you will not be able to install IE8 RC1. You will get an error message saying that your operating system is not supported since IE8 already ships in Win7. The IE8 RC1 available from Microsoft Download Center is a standalone upgrade for downlevel version of the OS only: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008 and Window Server 2003.
